What does a priest do?

Priests do much more than celebrate Mass and pray all day.
A priest’s life is active, demanding, challenging… and deeply rewarding.

There are many specialized ministries, such as being a chaplain, working in archdiocesan offices, or teaching in a seminary. But most priests serve in parishes.

The vast majority of priests live happy and fulfilling lives. They love the people they serve and, in turn, are loved by their parishioners. Traditionally, priests are considered to fulfill the biblical role of priest, prophet, and king.

Teach

Priests instruct others in the faith.

Shepherd (Guide)

Priests guide, unite, and encourage their parishioners.

Sanctify

Priests administer the sacraments and foster holiness.

A priest’s responsibilities include:

  • Celebrating Mass and preaching the Gospel.

  • Leading a parish of Catholics.

  • Bringing new members into the Church through Baptism.

  • Hearing confessions and offering spiritual direction.

  • Helping teens and young adults come to know Christ.

  • Preparing couples for marriage and accompanying them in their married life.

  • Teaching people to pray.

  • Feeding the poor, visiting prisons, and promoting justice.

  • Accompanying those going through difficult times.

  • Visiting the sick in hospitals and anointing them for their healing.

  • Celebrating funerals and burying the deceased.

  • Administering the material affairs of the parish.

  • Praying daily for the People of God.
